I'm going to be controversial here and say that I think he is a one hit wonder. District 9 was decent (although unsubtle... "fokkin prawns!"). Elysium was a very crude political commentary on healthcare and inequality (and I can't remember much else about the film except people running around going "fok" all the time and shooting things.)

I get that. I for one really liked District 9 and thought it was more than decent [IMDB 7.9 and 90% Rotten tomatoes] but always thought everything after was meh

CGI had some very big wins early on. Jurassic Park was made in 1993, and still looks really good today. Terminator 2 was two years earlier than that. It didn't try to be photorealistic, but it used the available tech in a way that was visually interesting. Maybe we're waiting for a filmmaker to find the right use for it. Apparently this isn't it.
