In 2025 I delivered a complete platform alone — end to end, two business lines, direct stakeholder ownership, requirements, architecture, delivery. Not because I coded faster. Because AI made coding cheap enough that the bottleneck shifted to understanding the problem, designing the solution, owning the outcome. The things we'd been told were someone else's job.
We spent a decade narrowing software engineering down to coding. Built entire organisational structures around that definition. AI didn't create a new kind of engineer — it just made the old definition impossible to ignore. The post covers what that looked like in practice, what it broke, and what it means for the generation of engineers who learned to code when coding was supposed to be enough.
