This article is weird: "In business terms, 'ascending' often means 'what we want to see first'—the best values, the top performers, the most important items."

Maybe I've led an unusually sheltered life or something but I have never heard anyone use "ascending" in that sense.

which is exactly the confusion, a lot of table/data view sorts use "ascending" or "descending" but it means a different thing every time, sometimes lowest first sometimes highest first. I might could have written a better introduction. Maybe I just coded myself into a bubble :)
