Science of the Gaps

Gibson should at least pick good gaps. The human evolution story is pretty well filled in. But where and when did ichthyosaurs originate? Same for plesiosaurs. Birds seem well explained at this point, but when did metazoans start? What about things like Francevillian and Stirling biota?
