If the government does not collect price data, there are no inflation numbers to compute. So inflation "disappears."

A much more skeptical person than myself might think this is to deliberately hide the effects of some random thing like, IDK, tariffs on consumer prices -- to use a completely made up example for purely speculative purposes.
