Startup is paying $500k/yr base for SWE

They got VC funding, they can spend it almost any way they want. And they likely need to deliver a lot in a short timeframe (like a year), so it's not like they are promising they'll be paying that salary for decades.

They could have easily spent $1M on a fancy office, and then it would not be news at all.
