Personally, I am also very much doing that too. All the reasons companies don't need us are also reasons we don't need them. Produce your own and reach the billions of consumers that use the internet. I only need 0.008% of Steam users to buy my game and I will earn more than I did last year, in the first half of this year. I have time for two shots at this a year. According to industry news blogs, about 15% of the indie games in my selected genre make more than I did last year.
