I have a free phone given to the poor. How do I determine if it's been used in a botnet? This is in San Francisco.

#2Do you have any indications your phone is infected or just general suspicion?
Not sure what the mobile malware game is like these days, and, depending on the depth of infection, factory reset may not help.
Easiest would be to sniff the network traffic, but that's only easily possible on WiFi connections with suitable appliances. Dunno how to do it on mobile networks, but there it would likely "only" serve as low-traffic proxy, I guess.
