#2I do not know what the article is about[1] but I will say that the conservatism of yesteryear (I grew up in the 1980s) was significantly different than it is today (at least widely reported mainstream conservatism). As a kid the prototypical conservative was Barry Goldwater[2]. I do not think old conservatives / libertarians are really represented by anyone any longer.

I think you're right about conservatism evolving. A good example is that not even conservative Evangelical Christians were concerned about abortion before the 1980s -- though conservative Catholics were, I believe.
On the other hand, some shifts in thinking were not dependent on ideology. Is it a myth that at one time Coca-cola had coca in it? Whether or not it did, it was readily available. And back in the 1960s both liberals and conservatives (and their kids!) drove around in cars with no seat belts!
