Ask HN: What resources to learn about making a computer mouse?

#1
For the last decade, I've been fascinated with the computer mouse. I want to know how it works and build one (not modding). But outside of the hardware, I can't seem to find a how-to guide or series of texts on programming a mouse.

What resources can you recommend to learn about the hardware and software of a computer mice?

As a complete beginner, I believe the task should take me ≤ 5 years to complete from learning to code to building a functional mouse.

Thanks!
