Yep, without some free samples it's very difficult get traction in HN and also to convince people to register.

For comparison, patio11 post(ed) a lot of great stuff for free with tips and ideas, and then sold his courses and consulting services https://www.kalzumeus.com/greatest-hits/

A few years ago, he went from consulting to a normal job, so most post are old, but IIUC he now is in consulting again. I still make comments with links to his old post because I think his advice is good.
