It is simply superior. Its cheaper to implement and license and cables are mostly futureproof.

Now if only monitor manufacturers would realize that I WANT MULTIPLE DISPLAYPORT INPUTS ON A SINGLE MONITOR! Finding monitors with multiple HDMI inputs is easy, while finding one with multiple DisplayPort is nearly impossible.

100% agree. I think nvidia using an outdated DP version on their latest GPUs has only made this worse.
One thing I've found is that sometimes displays will have USB-C & DisplayPort, which is effectively two DP inputs.
