How do you evaluate the battery on a used EV? What would be the things to watch out for? Is it self reporting? Is it all mitigated through manufacturer guarantees?

Battery cycles, number of cycles that dipped below 20%, State of Health, how many cells are out of balance and by how much (this stat is what causes full pack rebuilds) and total kWh charged and discharged.

It's fairly easy to plug in a Bluetooth OBD2 reader, open up AlfaOBD and see how damaged (or undamaged) a car's battery is.

I just don't understand how I would ever get an EV serviced, the small mechanic shops around me don't (or can't due to expensive manufacturer tools) really work on EVs. And I don't know how much I can do myself without manufacturer tools.

Plus the service costs just seem very high in general.

I can do all the work on my 4runner with a couple tools and parts are generally very cheap as well.
