This seems like it's retreading old ground. I disagree with the premise. I still use mediafire for this purpose!

There are also services like Volafile that link a light social context to this, which seems like an interesting evolution.

Mediafire, while it works, is a terrible user experience for someone receiving the file, IMHO.

When a feature becomes commoditized maybe it should be built in to the OS.
