So the question becomes if overeating causes this lack of appetite control over time, or if the lack of control is what caused someone to become overweight. As far as I can tell the study can’t determine this.

Hard to say, right? I'm always hungry. Constantly ready to eat and I have to force myself to go hungry just so I don't gain even more weight. If I eat 500 calories or 3000 calories it doesn't matter, my body screams at me that I need more food.
