Abstract

Here we introduce the General Theory of Animistic Agency to represent embedded cognitive agents. Animistic Agency constructs an identity between objective statements and evaluative statements, thereby strengthening inferences related to intentions, and refuting the is–ought problem (i.e. Hume's law). This formalism has plausible applications for cognitive science and philosophy, artificial general intelligence alignment, and for the analysis and design of incentive structures within multi-agent organizations, such as corporations, governments and markets.

Haven't read the whole thing yet but in "Meet Joe" I found a very astute description of the situation my best friend and I were commiserating about just yesterday.

Through the common cog blog I also stumbled onto this book recommendation: Complexity: The Emerging Science at the Edge of Order and Chaos by M. Mitchell Waldrop; and it feels like the complexity of today's world is partly responsible for this loss of agency many of us experience and dread

If the subject are interested you I highly recommend picking up the Quark and theJaguar, by Murray Gell-Mann. Its a foundational survey work in the subject and delightfully approachable (even though its theoretical physicist author doesn't consider himself much of a writer.) The author, who also happens to be the Nobel laureate whom gave the quark its name (after hypothesizing it's existence) is one of the founders of the Institute for Complexity Studies where much of the field's research activity is concentrated.
