Epic just released the Unreal 5 dev tools for Fortnite, allowing for modding with the Verse functional programming language.

Their monetization strategy looks interesting to say the least.

Modders receive 40% of all profits Epic makes through Fortnite, distributed proportional to mod popularity, and artists selling assets through the store receive 88% of their profits. All this seems very generous, and is no doubt Epic trying to compete with Roblox to create a "metaverse" of sorts.

Considering how easy relying on an existing engine with existing assets with a simple functional language would make game development, is this overall a good thing for the game development community? Or is Epic trying to get everyone to adopt their platform so they can have ever increasing amounts of control an iffy thing in the long run?
