Kazakhstan Seizes Russian Assets at Baikonur Spaceport

This is interesting. What does that say about the relations between them and Russia? (Can't read the article nectar paywalled.)

In general, it seems like Russia's relations with nearby Central Asian nations are weaker than they were a few years ago. There is perceived weakness because most of Russia's materiel is tied up far from their borders, and some nations like Azerbaijan and Armenia seem to feel that Russia is abrogating its duties to meditate conflicts within their regional CSTO alliance.

In Kazakhstan specifically, Russia deployed peacekeeping forces to stifle protests against the local government a bit over a year ago. Gratitude has poor staying power in global politics though, and it's unclear whether Russia has the resources for another such intervention.

It sounds like this is an issue over unpaid debts, and Kazakhstan mostly seized infrastructure which isn't going anywhere. So they're probably just changing the locks until they get paid.

The news is that they might have been too scared to do something like this in the past. Maybe they don't think that Russia will stick its neck out for the sake of Roscosmos' finances right now.
