#2Russia has put China in a very awkward situation, not least of which so much of Chinese military hardware is based on Soviet design.

"Demanding" is a strong word. It's China's position which it had since the beginning, but it's not necessarily sincere - it has to say this to not weaken its claim on Taiwan.
