#2We evolved to be diurnal. We evolved to spend the dark time of the day asleep. While we were evolving there was no such thing as long periods of artificial light. And nomads can't afford to carry large quantities of firewood around with them on their travels.
When the dark period of of the day is longer, we just sleep longer. No great mystery.
