A professional programmer should have the maturity not to interpret articles by pundits or the preferences of others as “pressure” to learn vim or emacs.

I learned vi and then vim when they came out. Like many other Unix command line tools they feel like second nature to me at this point. I also use VS Code. When I have to ssh to a customer’s server I use vim. i do that several times a day, but other programmers who do different kinds of work may never need to do that.

Of course you learn the tools you need, tools that help you get the job done. More tools make you more versatile and valuable.
