Unfortunately Gateway is not there yet it is still pretty buggy, crashes, keystrokes not registered, non-responding actions and the latest beta solves none of those that have been present for months. Also there is still no ARM support for the backend (it is promised for this year).

Agreed. To be clear it is still in Beta, but it clearly needs a lot of work still. I would love to use it, but half of the functionality just fails with no feedback. At this stage, using the actual IDE over remote desktop is a much better experience.

Compare that with the VS Code remote extension, everything just works and you can barely tell that you're not working entirely locally.

Agreed. To be clear it is still in Beta, but it clearly needs a lot of work still. I would love to use it, but half of the functionality just fails with no feedback. Compare that with the VS Code remote extension, everything just works and you can barely tell that you're not working entirely locally.

The problem with remote desktop is that you have more typing latency and I have issues getting a reliable and fast remote desktop of a Linux on a Mac. X2go just keeps freezing, VNC isn't really fast...
