Since Chiang Kai-shek the U.S. and Taiwan have, at various times, considered Taiwan’s Government the true government of China, the civil war as still ongoing, and have had a one China policy. It seems that the CCP will be no more willing to give up claim to Taiwan than the U.S. would be willing to give up claim to Hawaii. Reclaiming Taiwan would overcome the last remaining visible humiliation China suffered during the age of colonialism. It seems war is inevitable though what form that war takes remains to be seen.
