#2It’s an extremely good idea to have liability insurance, and most states have statutory requirements for workmans’ compensation and other coverage.

#3Depending on what the business is, some companies will refuse to do business without it.
For example, IBM only hires contractors with a specific amount of liability insurance. And it makes sense - you're working with them on their property, but since you're not an employee, you aren't covered under their liability insurance.
