The cost is insignificant for any senior engineer. The monitors are ~$0. The cost is all in the space needed and setup. That's just processes.
You would be getting into ergonomic issues with his setup.
I think the fact some workplaces still run on two 24" monitors is far more crazy. Children and secretaries should have minimum two 24" monitors.
There are some arguments against multiple monitors, I don't buy into it as a general idea - https://hackernoon.com/why-i-stopped-using-multiple-monitors...
