Based on the title I thought this was going to be about simulated organisms, but no, it's real organisms designed by an AI.

This is simultaneously really cool and supremely creepy.

They sometimes put "organism" in quotes, which I think is important. A far as I can tell, these aren't bona fide organisms, but appropriated tissue that has been treated in some way to incidentally behave in useful ways, sort of like if I sliced out your bicep and modified it somehow to flap about and therefore "walk" across the room.

And my brain initially read it as "orgasms".

TAKE MY MONEY... oh.

Ok.

Can someone with more understanding than me please comment what can be acheived with this tech in next decade or several decades.

From a layman perspective this seems outstanding to me but I am failing to imagine what can be achieved from this?

Based on a misread of the title, I read as "computer designed orgasms designed by deep learning" Also creepy - but perhaps inevitable.

An intriguing idea is what if we don't need to directly solve general artificial intelligence, but instead use standard AI to design and create biological life that is generally intelligent for some domain.
