Reminds me of one of the xkcd "what if" scenarios (book only) about eradicating the common cold.

The idea: in theory, by isolating everyone for 10 days, we could eradicate the common cold if it wasn't for people with weak immune systems. They could keep the virus for months and restart the epidemic.

Don't animals carry the virus as well?

It may to be the case for coronaviruses, but the scenario is mostly about rhinoviruses, which are the main cause of the common cold. And human rhinoviruses don't seem to be carried by animals.

Note that the book was published in 2014, well before covid, and coronaviruses are not mentioned at all, it just says that the common cold can be caused by "a variety of viruses, but rhinoviruses are the most common".
