A ML-trained module shows that there are trees in Sahara after all. This couldn't have been achieved without AI technology. It estimated ~2 billion of trees and shrubs. Absurdly impressive! This is a valuable information to deal with climate-change.

uhh do you need ML for this? the trees are there, in the sahara, you should be able to fly over and visually identify them.

Apparently from the satellite images the ML can identify more of them than a human eye can see while flying. For example you can't see the roots whereas ML can from the image identify that. That's how I understood why they used ML. It wouldn't have been published in Nature if the research was bollocks. Also how could you count 1.8 billion from flying over? Humanly impossible. Hence again the need of ML.
