A few years ago I did surgery on my LCD TV for a similar reason, some bugs had gotten in between the backlight and the LCD, and slowly migrated until they starved to death. Separated things, cleaned, then re-assembled... and it worked! This apparently was a thing for a while, like the rash of bad electrolytic capacitors in the 80s/90s.
