Google pushed a one-character typo to production, bricking Chrome OS devices

I've made some pretty dumb operator mistakes myself but this seems strange from a huge org with what I imagine are gobs of neat little innovations for great coding. Code analysis tools exist that would make this issue pretty obvious, right? Are they not used as much as one would think? (More curious than critical)
