It is not a plane, but a 3D cube. It is divided in 3x3x3 sub-cubes, from bottom to top, and front to back. That is 27 characters. You can multiply that number easily if you use another cube to shift/control into another 3D layer. Since you have to move only 1 centimeter to push a key down, it is more efficient than the traditional plane keyboard.
