I've been chewing on this idea for quite a few years now. I sure wish I had someone to mentor me when I struggled in the early part of the career.

I really do wonder if we might benefit from teaching programming like a trade discipline instead of expecting devs to do a degree like computer science.

I received very little formal programming education from my compsci degree. I did get an understanding of a lot of foundation and principles, but as far as programming goes I sometimes feel just purely self-taught.
