Something I do not see being mentioned in this NYTimes or TheRegister article. If I am not mistaken he was the one who had the idea for "VisualHostKey"in SSH. I remember a column/article about "advanced" SSH usage from him in early 2000's.

The author of that OpenSSH feature, Alexander von Gernler, tells that story:

Video of Kaminsky exploring the problem and how to fix it, 10 minutes into "Black Ops 2006 Viz Edition":

Since a lot of people seem to care most about this part: "His aunt, Dr. Toby Maurer, said the cause was diabetes ketoacidosis, a serious diabetic condition that led to his frequent hospitalization in recent years."

As a PSA, if you happen to have diabetes and COVID, you should desist from taking certain diabetes drugs, or else it can cause diabetes ketoacidosis: https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20210112/common-diabetes-med...

Nasty condition.

My diabetic dad responded to the vaccine in a similar manner. We spent one scary day in the hospital. After changing his pills to insulin shots (temporarily for a month), he started getting well again.

Some non-doctor info on first-time T2 diabetes ketoacidosis for overweight people, and ironically, one benefit:

1) symptoms are losing 1 pound per day, vision "graying out" and constant thirst, and tiredness/loss of focus, and eventually coma and death

2) if you're overweight but otherwise healthy (you walk daily and have strong cardio), you can "ride down" the weight loss for a month or two to lose 30 - 40 pounds. This is the easiest rapid weight loss that works for most people and helps greatly with diabetes.

(Do not do this if you're otherwise unhealthy. See a doctor immediately if you feel it's necessary, or if you don't understand your health state at any time.)

What happens is that your body fat is consumed for calories instead of normal nutrition (since your pancreas isn't producing insulin). This affects your blood chemistry, which does affect your heart. After you lose 30 - 40 pounds, your pancreas may function better, ending the ketoacidosis.

3) read food labels and avoid HFCS and sugar. (ketoacidosis can be triggered by 3 or 4 regular Cokes daily, so don't drink that. Coke Zero is ok, but think about drinking non-soda alternatives like tea or coffee with Splenda.) Eat at regular times, and do not skip eating for a day or you could (likely) go into a coma.

What will happen is that the weight loss and reduction in sugar from #2 and #3 will reduce the effects of ketoacidosis and may stop it, and possibly stop T2. At that point you need to learn about long-term mgmt., including weight loss, exercise and eating a high-quality diet (home-cooked traditional foods) at regular times daily.

4) After #3, if you still have the symptoms in #1, you need to see a doctor/ICU immediately since medium or long-term ketoacidosis is fatal. The doctor will prescribe insulin or other medicine like metformin and you will need to do glucose monitoring.

Even gaining 5 pounds can trigger ketoacidosis again, so don't do that.
