I can leave my door unlocked all day and reasonably expect that nobody will come in to my house. This is mainly because there is an expectation that houses are locked, so there is very little benefit searching for unlocked houses to walk in to.

There is a very small risk that a single email sent between individuals containing sensitive information would be intercepted. But if such a thing became common practice or if lots of sensitive information was being sent to a certain location then the incentive is increased.
