This was a great article but unfortunately it made a very glaring error at the beginning which made me quite dismissive of the whole thing. Thankfully I took a second look at it.

The error is that the referenced rfc was not written in 1945 (the internet was not even in existence back then!) It was written in 1996. Maybe the author got confused by the rfc number which is 1945, thinking that was the year that it was written.
