It is widely accepted that the human adult needs sleep to fully function on a physical, emotional and mental level - but just how much sleep is enough. What will happen if you don't get it. What if you do sleep each night but still feel awful each morning.
The answer to this question is in study the sleep cycle. Much research has been done by sleep clinics worldwide and it is now known that most of the physical restorative sleep occurs within the first three hours of sleep - which is why most of us can function on a physical level even after short bursts of sleep. This is not to say that this is all the sleep we need - it just means that you should not obsess over the number of hours you receive each night. Even those of us who manage the recommended 7-8 hours per night don't always feel rested and alert - and this can be for a number of reasons and boils down to sleep quality versus sleep quantity.
