"Journalists in Hungary interviewed for this article believe that Google’s award to Origo was an accident. “Most probably they didn’t realize who this company is,” said a journalist who used to work with Origo before it was taken by Orban’s underlings."

That seems to sum it up. Not much due diligence, and a €50,000 grant got awarded.

There are great civilian newspapers in Hungary where this money really could have made a difference :(
