One of the main challenges is that you don't just make a PeerTube account and start uploading. You have to somehow get hosting for your videos, don't you?

It's probably not wise to move, but cross posting between YouTube and a personal PeerTube instance should be the route that content creators go at first.
Eventually with services like PeerTube, Patreon, Drip, it'd be nice if we one day saw more people in the general public not going to YouTube and instead to specific PeerTube instances to get their content.
I'd like to see YouTube turn into MySpace, and Google have to eat all their advertisement focus, false copyright claims, censoring content bullshit.

This isn't as bad as it sounds. Enough PeerTube instances are already open to general public.

#7I don't know if video publishing is a great use-case for federated stuff like that. The pain points in video are streaming, storing and (maybe) following. There isn't so much discussion and replies and sharing going on on YouTube, for example, so this seems the wrong way to go.
I would think something in which each publisher hosts its own video on its own IPFS instance (of course, IPFS-powered viewers will rehost) and there's some basic indexing.

I am not familiar w/ the tech here (specifically concerning live streaming vs on-disk), but one wonders if you can proxy YouTube over PeerTube to ease the transition. Would require live search backed by site scraping, ability to stream YouTube videos over BT/PeerTube on demand, etc.
Like youtube-dl but ephemeral, at least then content creators can dual host if they want. Or an easy-import feature. Or maybe just a combined user interface for clients so they don't have to switch back and forth.

Anything that gets large enough to matter will have to deal with false copyright claims and censoring content bullshit, without the help of the Google legal department. Your future is a future of hosts constantly disappearing, due to copyright claims, child pornography, and not wanting to deal with the bullshit drama of running a server anymore. With a couple of surviving, but being way locked down and moderated. 21st century phpbb message boards, ephemeral as hell.
Not to say I don't approve of the software. A self hosting video platform that doesn't die at the first viral video is a powerful thing. But Youtube is Youtube because of network effects and monetization, not technology.

YouTube demonetization is such a big problem for most creators, I'm sure a last impactful YouTube scandal could push a lot of users to another platform.
