A $14,000 pillow: Why buying eiderdown is so expensive

I've never heard of eiderdown, but did a while back buy a down pillow that was around $400 (at Stanford mall), which I though was outrageous, but proved to be great for a good night sleep. When I went back to the store, it was replaced with another expensive one that cost over $1,000.

The pillow does make a big difference in sleep quality.

Does your pillow have a sealed plastic cover? Do you constantly buy new ones?

If not, how is it that you aren't miserable? Dust mites can live in there. You can end up congested, with teary eyes, with a runny nose, with a cough, etc.

In the H.C. Andersen fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea", the princess sleeps on 20 mattresses and 20 eiderdown duvets[1].

[1]: It seems to be translated into eider-down beds, that seems to be another meaning of "bed" than I am aware of, oxford dictionary doesn't mention it either: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/bed - might have been used to mean beddings? The danish word is "edderdunsdyner" which in contemporary usage means eiderdown duvets.
