How to Make the Gun Industry Pay

We should tax cars and use the proceeds to pay for all the people who are injured and killed by cars every year.

I don't really see how taxing guns actually fixes the issue. We need to look into all aspects of the issue and identify all the causes.

* If we had universal coverage for emergency medical care, the victims would not be saddled with huge bills.

* If we de-stigmatized mental health issues, people with them would seek out help earlier.

* If we publicly funded mental health care those people would not be prevented from seeking help by costs of doing so.

* If we were more accepting and considerate of opposing viewpoints, people would not be driven to radical extremism (disclaimer: obviously, there are people who would still be extreme, but this would deny them the support of much of the middle ground.)

* If we were not constantly talking about banning all the guns all the time many gun owners would be more receptive to restrictions.

* If people who were talking about gun control would learn more about guns, the restrictions they propose would make more sense.

* If we considered a new approach to the drug war, or getting rid of it altogether, we would reduce a lot of gun violence in the US.

* If we stopped lying with statistics, we might figure out what is really happening.

This debate, like many others in American politics, seems to presuppose that some spectacular and far reaching measure is the solution to the whole problem. Just ban guns and no-one will get killed with guns anymore, right?

No, we need to get everyone at the table and sort out a middle ground that covers all the aspects of the problem and stop ham-handedly attempting to fix it by banning black paint and cosmetic features.
