Tesla is freaking brilliant. Perfect example of vertical integration. If Apple can do this with iphones, Tesla should be able to pull it off with their cars. Though Apple had a lot more money to handle the associated customer service. Tesla does have the tech and the stores to pull off an Apple. And feedback from insurance runs should give them data on improving the cars. Plus they can prevent insurance companies from sellers loss runs on Teslas to competitors.

Edit - Current car insurance products in the market are probably not suitable for autonomous or electric cars as they are based on some very old data. There is little data available in the market for these kind of cars. Insurance products usually need 3 years of loss runs to create an insurance that fits that data. So current insurance companies are stuck with charge more for variation possibility

One of the Canadian provinces does a sort of vertical integration, in that they build the roads as well as offer car insurance. This aligns the incentives. The state is financially motivated to build safer roads and fix problems."
