#5Buy and selling old cars/bikes is also cost effective in some countries.
I like the idea because that makes you less dependent on cheap flights you need to plan ahead, plus you get to more remote (cooler) places.

#10I personally think cycle-touring with camping equipment is the best way to travel long term on the cheap without relying on couchsurfing and similar systems. I've done longer trips in Australia, China, France, Romania and Taiwan but always stay in hotels. It still works out pretty cheaply since you see loads of cool stuff between towns and food/etc. always costs less out of major centers. Another benefit is scheduling - leave when you wake up, stop where you please. No more sync-with-the-bus-departure, alarm-clock hassles. Try it!
For inter-continental, couple your bike and camping equipment with a second hand oceangoing yacht. You can get very decent vessels under USD$100,000, and the best place to buy on the used market seems to be Florida.
