#5I'm a happy user of VOIP. Instead of using skype, I use SIP for which there are many computer programs. A good convenient program is CSipSimple. https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=com.csipsimple

#7This is very disappointing. Skype has been one of those "just works" solutions for calling distant family members - even if they're running underpowered hardware. I currently use https://tel.red/ to connect to Lync / "Skype for Business" on Linux. I wonder if that's a possible solution?

Cool, but the power of Skype isn't the VOIP part, it's that others use it want to call you.
