IMO this is a bigger deal than everyone realizes. If Fable 5/Mythos 5 are considered dangerous enough to invoke export controls on then future models are almost guaranteed to trigger the same process. Locking them down to US citizens is _very_ interesting. I don't think any tech company so far tracks licenses attached to citizenship.

I suspect the decision to lock the models down to only US Citizens was chosen because that's the maximum the government can do under established law. They invoked ITAR to do it. No equivalent laws exists (yet) to allow the government to shut it down completely.

I'm thankful I tested Fable via my subscription before the cutoff. To me, it seemed like at least part of the improvements were in how it broke up work for a "one-shot" style prompt, but I was very impressed at how quickly and effectively it produced better results than Opus 4.8 at a handful of real-world use cases I threw at it from my own work.

Another interesting finding which I've heard others corroborate is that even though the per-token cost was higher, it seemed to orchestrate the work efficiently and burn through fewer tokens, roughly evening out to approximately the same per-prompt token usage as Opus.

When you spend a lot of time telling people how dangerous your products are, people who have the power to keep dangerous products off the market might listen. Especially if those people aren't presently very bright, and are already mad at you for not helping them achieve their unrelated authoritarian goals. I do not think this is somehow a 3D chess move by Anthropic. They are not masterminds, even if they'd really li…

Do you have any idea what actual authoritarianism looks like? What an insult to people who are truly suffering.

"Other people may have it worse, so we should not use language that (in my opinion) devalues their struggle". This adds nothing to the discussion of the original or larger point(s).
