I agree that intelligent people often get railroaded into a certain kind of life, but I think the prognosis is still a little off. It's clear in the US that owning a successful company has some of the highest outcomes possible in society (if financial freedom is the goal). People who don't have those types of things in mind can only be so smart in my book.
"Successful" is the key. A winning lottery ticket is one of the quickest ways to get money, the hard part is the "winning". If you are smart, there are many career paths that are highly likely to be very profitable, with small risk of failure and a pretty high floor. That is not the case for starting a business. The upside is potentially much higher, but it is much less likely, and the downside is huge.
Having access to capital is much more important than smarts, which is why so many people starting businesses have generational money propping them up, or as a safety net. Even smart people are usually reliant on that family capital. Bill Gates’ parents were millionaires, Musk and his dad’s emerald mine, Thiel started his first hedge fund with a million dollars raised from “friends and family”.

Reminds me of my friends in Gaza, where every day means no shops, no restaurants, no home, no medicine, no food, no water, no hope. The beaches are full of people just trying to exist.
Maybe next time Gaza won't break a ceasefire, invade, and kill and rape over a thousand people.

#994I agree that devices/internet/AI can pull you away from the life around you. In my apartment building, though, we have a group chat to coordinate laundry schedules for the laundry machines on the first floor. It started during Covid and continued even after and with new people moving in. It's turned into a nice, helpful conversation about not only laundry but packages and street parking and more. It's helped to get to know the neighbors better than without.

This reminds me of the Jewish Sabbath. Here in Tel Aviv, Saturday means no shops, much fewer restaurants, less programming on TV, gyms/etc open late/close early. The parks and beaches are full of people just existing.

In what context did you witness all these cases? It's one thing to know these cases exist because they all have been reported in the news or having made a note of it through separate and unrelated word of mouth interactions, but one person having direct experience of all these cases is unusual for a civilian (ie non-medical or healthcare professional).
3 would be either direct or friends/relatives with experience and I got involved to help, other 3 would be through news and incidentally knowing some people.

I think about how violently HN (in general) reacts to technology like Web Environment Integrity which could enable websites to relatively easily block AI spam, and at the same time opine about the days of being able to talk to (just) humans online. Personally I'd be fine at this point for _some_ kind of identity based authentication for discussion forums, at least. I'm tired of hearing ChatGPT's opinion on things.
I'd rather pay some nominal fee for access than give up my identity to an unaccountable entity I'd struggle to take cross-border action against if that became necessary. The price shouldn't exclude anyone who's struggling, just a one-time fee of £5 or so that'd damage the economic viability of creating slop accounts at scale.
Something Awful took this route twenty years ago out of frustration. Very surprisingly, it actually worked. And the few spammers who did keep paying, were less frustrating for the owners to deal with, since they were an income source.
It does create a massive conflict of interest.

I just keep blowing raspberries down the line until I'm connected to a human. There are or course some asshole companies whose bots are designed to never connect you to a human and just hang up after a while.
This is a satisfying way to deal with frustration. Unfortunately, it also gets spit all over whatever device you're speaking toward. Sometimes worth it for sure, though.
Oh you can direct the stream a bit to the side or just raspberry softly. The important thing is to make sure the prrffftt sounds are Gaussian-distributed.

Connected with friends, strangers. Everyone was so in the moment because there was nowhere else to be, nothing else to distract them. People would pick up their phone and realise there was nothing there for them and put it back…

In the Miami area it is similar.
On Saturdays, in the town of Surfside, I would frequently see many Orthodox Jewish people at the beaches and cheerfully going for walks and so on. A pleasant and wonderful atmosphere.
