Yeah, and as part of the "class war", a majority of the lower classes decided to elect a billionaire whose first order of business was to implement giant tax cuts for the richest Americans while cutting programs like Medicaid and SNAP. Class war will never work in America because we're too stupid.

Correction: the class war already started long ago. Unfortunately the lower classes are not only getting trounced, they mostly don’t know the war is happening.

It turned out the revolution was always being televised, only it was us thinking what we saw was a reflection of society, not that it was being delivered to us disguised as our own ideas.

H1Bs aren't paid 1/8 their counterparts in the same company. And no, the same applies to India and to China but because the number is small here we pick the small numbers from the rest of the world as well. We don't only hire people from India and China in tech they are just more populous countries so their best workers are far more numerous. >We don't only hire people from India and China in tech they are just more populous countries so their best workers are far more numerous.

So we are talking H1Bs. Does that mean this small pool of "best foreign talent" also all happen to speak English and are able to communicate their ideas on a team?

>the same applies to India and to China but because the number is small here we pick the small numbers from the rest of the world as well.

Well you're already shifting your point:

> But altogether the amount of people who can pass a code screen in the US is pretty low.

You're criticizing America as an excuse to find people overseas and bring them in. Thanks for proving the fact that H1B is being abused. So you're telling me your fine taking the time to find the finest H1B workers but not Americans?

But altogether the amount of people who can pass a code screen in the US is pretty low. If you ever interviewed people for a software position in a big tech firm, you'd realize this. I'm convinced that the code screen functions as a somewhat arbitrary filter/…

It's a necessary filter. Again, you need to interview candidates for these jobs to understand. Our industry doesn't have any qualifications, any exam to pass to certify, so there are just a ton of people who can't do the basic job but think they are qualified because we don't have a good way to screen people for this work.

>Our industry doesn't have any qualifications, any exam to pass to certify,

By design of FAANG, yes. They put down any attempts to certify SWEs

Not sure why that would illegal? Your own performance isn’t protected in anyway as a class that you can’t control. I know Lyft 100% laid off people not hitting meets expectations in 2020 first

Again I am no expert here, this is just my understanding after being in the industry for a couple decades. As far as I'm aware, there's a fine line between layoffs or reductions in force and firing for poor performance. Its legal to cut an entire division, or to cut some percentage of a division's head count and come up with some way of distributing it across the org. It is not legal to find your worst performers, fi…

Every single employee can be fired for any reason that is not a protected class. All professionals are hired at will.

Actually I've worked at companies where management is exactly like this. Literally just status updates and asking when things are going to be finished. I have no respect for middle managers whatsoever. These people are a parasite on the industry.

Ok, Ok, I get the disdain for middle management. It's basically exactly like you described, but middle management didn't come about for no reason. There really is a value and the idea of automating it away with AI is extremely dubious. One could even argue that middle management is THE most critical role in corporations over a certain size. In that it is the glue that allows them to get to that size. But it's also wh…

What a great defense of middle managers. I need to steal this!

There's no reason why it shouldn't, but why should American corporations subsidize it?

Because they can hire 5 programmers in India for the cost of 1 in America, and American programmers aren't 5x better than Indian ones ? Amazon is an online shop, not a jobs program. I'm sure they would rather eliminate a position altogether even more than sending it to India.

Let me rephrase that. Why should American citizens allow American corporations to do that?

How am I shifting my point?

If we have say 1M job openings in a field, and only 250k American citizens can pass a screen for that job, then we need to find other people for it, no? Those people will be likely to most common from the most populous countries in the world...

The printing press also led to books changing from being something only rich people had to everyone having books. This also enabled the industrial revolution, as books made literacy worth having, newspapers, and became a great storehouse of knowledge. I.e. it created far, far more jobs than it destroyed.

One wonders if a German in 1600 would have cursed the invention of the printing press. The printing press accelerated the reformation, which led to over a century of bloody religious wars. Something like a third of the German population died as a result. From the perspective of 2025, the printing press was undoubtedly positive for humanity. But millions of people suffered.

It is refreshing to hear someone mention that when discussing the printing press (however horrible it is). Most people only paint a rosy picture.

I work at Amazon and I see who got cut. You can also check the WARN notice in WA.

You can find the warn notices here. [0] From a quick script I wrote up, it seems that ~60% of layoffs noted on 1/26/2026 are from individual contributors [0]: https://esd.wa.gov/employer-requirements/layoffs-and-employe...

The new notice came out, that one is for Amazon Fresh only I think. It's 84% ICs now.
