China has no allies, it probably doesn't need them. However, China doesn't control its vital sea-lanes. It has less water per person than Saudi Arabia. China has more old people than the west and Confucianism prohibit to "great leap forward" them. China is not escaping the middle income trap.

Wow, thank you for the effort in typing out that this synopsis! Seems like quite the compelling read. I have already retrieved the book & will start it tonight.

I also enjoyed the TV series equally.

It diverges much from the book but it's enjoyable and terrifying at some points. I just really don't like ending - it felt rushed and way too open like they'd still had hopes for another series.

Personally I'd kept Dick's basis of this series and incorporate Robert Harris "Fatherland" novel that would set action for a longer while in Europe. It easily could provide action for at least 2 more seasons.

Did the consensus shift about TikTok? I thought it was a given that as tech/IT people TikTok isn’t an app worth having on your phone due to spyware/attention brute forcing/curated propaganda by Chinese government.

Well, I had it _becuase_ it was non-us propaganda. Otherwise all I have is US propaganda. If i must be manipulated, then let folks with competing objectives have an equal shot, hopefully they cancel each other out.

Now though? Tiktok isn't worth having, it is same old.

All good. I would say Watchmen (the show) is one of those ones in particular that is truly above the noise however. I even hesitate to call it “pop culture.” It’s “high art” if I can be pretentious about it, and a powerful mirror for us.

At a time when state violence in the US is brandished so loudly and proudly, it feels like a very important piece of media for folks to watch.

Because we live in the most politicized time in history, enabled by social media. We also have the largest proportion ever of mentally ill and under/unemployed people in America with nothing better to do, no real career and/or family prospects, so they must latch onto trying to further their feel-good ideologies to give their lives meaning.

It's incredibly ironic that the left, originally the party of labor, is so strongly protecting illegal immigration. When you let in 20 million low skilled workers from different cultures into your country, who do you think suffers: capital or labor? Who feels the pressure in rising housing prices, job prospects, rising crime in cities, etc?

The other ironic part to this whole situation is that the current administration goes so hard on their rhetoric and marketing but ultimately are deporting less people than ever before. Everyone is losing here, and the American Empire is fading away, eroding from the inside out.
