Not only is this cool to watch and I'm crossing my fingers that their claims are legit, but it is always so cool to see those moments in science where the whole world comes together to work on something. Is this excitement and teamwork what it really means to be human?

Same as in China, work a lot with the hope of getting papers to top journals.

people will claim all kinds of crazy, implausible shit in patents. you would go insane trying to draw conclusions from the set of applications sent to patent offices as a whole, it would be impossible to differentiate what is legitimately worth paying attention to.

I hate that the patent system went from engineers patenting a working, proven idea to business a-holes patenting an "idea" then sitting on their butts waiting for an engineer somewhere to prove the idea so that they can raise their hand and say "I have the patent on that". The modern patent system is despicable.

There are actually provisions that are supposed to prevent that. It's called the enablement requirement. You cannot claim an invention that you don't know how to make. But in practice, it turns out to be easy to argue around that; there are so many non-experts involved in the process. So here we are.

A breakthrough of this kind should be illegal to patent

The formula and atomic structure should not be patentable (like gene sequence), but a novel and non-obvious industrial process to fabricate such material could be patented. There may be many different such patents.

Things also tend to be invented at about the same time at different places. I wonder if there are other people who were this close to invent it but just couldn't get it right.

According to Wikipedia, the material was invented in 1999.

Not even close. Cold fusion was not something we thought was possible under our understanding of physics at the time (Muon-catalyzed fusion isn't what they thought CF was and there are all sorts of things that make it not really something that we expect to ever be particularly useful for power generation, etc., so not much purpose in talking about it) Meanwhile, all our known physics have no issue with an RTAPS exist…

I've seen some math that shows RTS are not possible.

There is a tendency to call any scientific work that came out of anywhere in the former USSR as "Russian". Nikolay Bogolyubov is probably at least as "Ukrainian" as "Russian": he grew up and went to university in Kyiv, became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and now has a physics institute named after him in Kyiv (and another in Moscow) -> https://www.encyclopedia.com/science/dictionaries-the…

It's not a "tendency", it's truth. All people you mention are Russians because they were living in USSR, speaking Russian language, worked in Russia and for them Ukraine was an administrative region. Not to mention the fact that the country that denies Soviet legacy and achievement does not have moral right to attribute anything that has been done during the period to people and regime which despises their own past, legacy, sacrifices, relatives, and denies everything that has been done. So ridiculous.

Indeed the original draft said USSR, but we are talking about Russian theories , not USSR scientists who are ethnically Ukrainian. We came to realize that we have so little information about the exact theory and our best knowledge suggests that the theory is, while may or may not have been pioneered by a Ukrainian scientist (see the updated post), currently rooted in Russia and not in the former USSR.

"Ethnic Ukrainian"? What is that? Someone from the village near Polish border?

If we are able to make superconductor magnets, create a fusion reactor and as a same time have lossless transmissions of power. Would it make energy extremely cheap ? Can access to energy become free and delivered as a commodity by countries to attract businesses and taxpayers ? This would be mind blowing, with this and automation/robotisation of work, life as we know it today will seam very ancient for next century generations.

Also, are there other blocking points for inertial confinement fusion ? Would it also make solar power and wind farm pointless ?
