I just put Asahi on an M2 Air and it works so incredibly well that I was thinking this might finally be the year linux takes the desktop .. I wasn't aware of the drama w/Apple but I imagine M2 hardware will become valuable and sought after over M3+ just for the ability to run Asahi

The really sad thing is Alyssa Rosenzweig was doing Libreboots on potato ARM laptops a few years ago. Asus C201 if I remember correctly. Alyssa went on to create Panfrost, which was fucking incredible. Then Alyssa left freedom and started working on Asahi instead. Now Lenovo is shipping a bad ass ARM chromebook with benchmarks in the M2 macbook territory, and where did Alyssa go? To work for proprietary Intel. Had Alyssa stuck with freedom, we would have had a very nice HP Chromebook x360 13b-ca0047nr, fully repairable, fully free cpu, gpu, and wifi, like a few years ago. 2016 Macbook Pro tier laptop, not at all shabby.

And now today, an even better Lenovo chromebook 3nm, 16GBs RAM, even a 50 tops NPU... but no. Alyssa had to go chase proprietary Apple. We have the hardware today. FSF could be selling fully free RYF ARM machines right now. Like FULLY free, all the way down to the EC, below the boot loader, below the CPU firmware even. But they aren't. The talent jumped ship for a soulless corporate paycheck.

I'm not faulting anyone for making a living either, I understand. But I'm pretty sure Alyssa was making a decent living with Collabra. Now Intel has their claws in, and will bury that brilliant developer in a back office doing miserable work. Whatever money Intel is paying, it wasn't worth the pride and impact that could have been made in software freedom.

It's just sitting right there. Victory is just laying there for someone to pick it up. But nobody with the talent is even trying now.

The Quest 3 works offline with ALVR streaming over a private (non-Internet connected) WiFi network. Together with my 3090 I get 8k @ 120fps with 20ms latency over a WiFi6e dongle. I had to manually install the dkms for the dongle on PopOs, but apart from that it just works. ALVR starts SteamVR and then I use Steam to start the game. Proton seems to use Vulcan for rendering.

Overall, I had a pretty bad experience with ALVR. I never managed to figure out the cause of stuttering on mine. I wished Meta would support Linux.

Have you given WiVRn a try? I’ve heard good things.

Sure it's not as in-your-face, but steam/proton does log and I'm fairly sure that a combination of at most setting a command invocation parameter, looking at the game logs and system logs will show you the exact problem and given that these games run just fine for a lot of people, the fix is probably trivial.

Possibly because you won’t have as many logs to look at on Windows, merely given the option of sending a proprietary dump blob to the developer’s bug tracker, and then hoping they eventually fix whatever mystery issue is affecting you. God help you if it’s the overzealous DRM or anticheat from some other game that likely isn’t present in their QA machines.

There are a few games I play that have native Linux versions available (e.g. Warhammer Total War) and getting support requires you to run Ubuntu. Not the end of the world, but that plus some dev work was enough to get me to stick to it.

as pointed out by others and throughout the thread, anti-cheat is very restrictive inside a vm. even cloud streaming fails to support some popular titles from EA and R* due to this.

meanwhile, WSL exists, and now provides good gpu passthrough and has a higher success rate with the said permutation.
