At the surface they seem like I’m recording for my parents (we live very far from each other). Deep down I would like to get YouTube income eventually.

Just use your phone or a vid camera normally so that your subjects can understand that you are making a video of them. Sneakiness sucks.

Why did you have to switch to a Facebook account? I was gifted a Meta Quest 3S, and I was forced to make a Meta account, but I didn’t have to make a Facebook account.

When the Quest 2 came out they shifted from using a specific Oculus account to requiring Facebook accounts. It was a dumb idea and my wife was questioning why I made a Facebook account for my 12 year old kid (who as a typical Gen Z will probably never use FB proper). They have since reversed that decision.

I dislike being forced into any Meta account whatsoever, and I would’ve purchased a Valve Index, but I did get the headset for free in a giveaway.

If they can actually make the neural interface work that well then Meta has won this round.

I think the backlash against Google Glass was counterproductive - the product was intentionally made to be obvious that someone was wearing it. But because of the backlash, companies that want to do this kind of tech now have to hide it, such as this.

Yeah, the backlash against Google glass was dumb and nonsensical purely because that same tech will eventually become fully accepted by society.

But we are often a disappointing species.

Ever since I saw that episode I've felt like it's inevitable that something like this will become commonplace. If I had a product like this that actually worked as imagined, and the full data pipeline was under my complete control, I could think of a dozen reasons why I'd want to use it. If we take it for granted that this is coming whether we want it or not (and I'm not saying we necessarily must, but it's worth pondering)... is there a way to design the technology, and cultivate new social norms, such that we end up with something that's a net positive rather than a dystopian panopticon? I haven't been able to answer this for myself, at least not yet.

(Even setting the social repercussions aside, though, Zuck/Meta being involved is a dealbreaker for me.)

Same, but I would love to have map navigation displayed occasionally. I use bicycle in the city a lot and so many times I had to pull the phone (+unlock with face ID) while cycling, just to see the directions, and it's both frustrating and dangerous.

I use the voice guidance of Google Maps for it and in that context, Rayban is just a bluetooth piece.

Hookup culture or any space (bars, clubs, festivals) where some level of shenanigans are expected will be destroyed by this even further than what smartphones has already done. Imagine you take your kids to the beach and people are wearing these things. So even the beach won't be safe anymore.

Bluetooth speakers have already ruined the beach in much of the world.

More frequently connected to your friends, so more ads can be sold to you and them, and more data collected to sell to other advertisers / surveillance forces? Doesn't sound all the great to me.. If it was open source with zero tracking, I might consider it. As it is, HARD PASS.

I've and many other people have found targeted ads to be good. ;)
